Scientifically, double eyelid is known as “upper eyelid crease” or “supratarsal crease/fold”. When the eyes are opened, the crease across the skin of the upper eyelid deepens into a skin fold. This crease forms double eyelid due to fibrous connections between the underside of the eyelid skin and the levator muscle that pulls the eyelid upwards.

Why double eyelid is not available for some?
In many cases, often in the oriental descent (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), double eyelids are rare. This is caused by the lack of above mentioned fibrous tissue and the levator muscle, making the crease and fold lesser. This has no relations with any health issues as such, rather it is more of the characteristics of the races, which is inherited genetically through generations.

Significance of double eyelid
Double eyelid gives the appearance of bigger, brighter and more youthful eyes. It also adds beauty by naturally angling the eyelash upwards and outwards. Without the crease of the eyelid, eyes seem to be smaller in both width and length. This also causes the eyes to always look sleepy, puffy and constantly unintentionally glaring.

Double Eyelid Surgery – How to get double eyelid?
Non-Incision Double Eyelid surgery is effectively carried out using the stitching method and is suitable for most people. With a technique that initially evolved from “DST” (double suture and twisted technique), our Korean-trained cosmetic surgeon Dr Shens has modified this technique for longer lasting and longer crease with more anchor points. More sutures and knots are created permanent, scarring for a more permanent crease.

What are Double Suture and Twisted Technique (DST)?
DST technique is a sophisticated version of the traditional suture(non-incision) method of double eyelid surgery. This technique creates folds naturally through four incision points. It is fast and long lasting, which does not involve invasive cutting. Dr Shens has now modified the method to Triple Suture Twisted Technique (TST) for a longer lasting and crease with more secure anchor points.

How does TST creates double eyelid?
With 4 stab incisions in the upper eyelids, one of two needles loaded with double-armed 7-0 nylon is passed in one direction alternately through the dermis and the conjunctiva, while the other needle is passed subconjunctivally in the opposite direction. Both ends of the sutures are knotted within a lateral stab incision of the upper eyelids and are buried in the orbicularis oculi muscle.

Does the procedure involve pain?
The procedure is done with local anesthesia, thus, no pain is felt while having the procedure.

How many sessions to get the desired outcome?
This is a one-time procedure to get to the desired outcome, unless the eyelids are rubbed vigorously, causing the suture points to snap. Otherwise, the results are long lasting.

Differences between Incision and Non-Incision Double Eyelid Creation

Incision Double Eyelid Creation
(Open Blepharoplasty
Non-incision Double Eyelid Creation
(Double Suture and Twist Technique-DST)
Cutting of the eyelid skin, exposing and removing portion of the underlying structures such as the muscle and fats.No cutting of eyelids is required. Our Korean Trained Plastic Surgeon has modified techniques with more secured suture points for long-lasting results.
Repositioning of some of the lid elevating muscles is usually required. No invasive surgery is required.
Risk of complications is higher compared to DST. Chances of Scarring.Less complications compared to Open Blepharoplasty. Scarless on the exterior skin.
Downtime in open blepharoplasty is significantly longer than its counterpart suturing methods due to the innate nature of being an invasive surgery with cutting and removal of eyelid structuresLower downtime.
About 2-3 days of swelling and slight bruising. Suture points do not snap easily unless eyelids are rubbed hard.
Using makeup remover or applying facial products do not snap the suture points.
This procedure is NOT ReversibleReversible procedure to remove the stitches
